Job Summary
The Project Superintendent owns day-to-day execution on assigned site development, underground utilities, and heavy civil projects across Virginia and the Mid-Atlantic. You lead self-performed VED crews, hold the schedule, and partner with the Project Manager and Safety Director to deliver work on time, on budget, and to the standard the company is known for.
This is a field-based role. You set the tone on site every morning, work directly with foremen, owners, inspectors, and design teams, and are accountable for the quality of every grade, pipe, and structure your crew turns over.
Education
- 01High school diploma or equivalent required.
- 02Associate's or Bachelor's degree in Construction Management, Civil Engineering, or related field preferred but not required.
Additional Educational Requirements
- 01OSHA 30-hour Construction certification (or willingness to complete within 60 days of hire — paid by VED).
- 02Current First Aid / CPR certification.
- 03VDOT Erosion & Sediment Control Inspector certification preferred.
- 04Confined-space and trench-safety competent-person training preferred.
Experience
Minimum 7 years of progressive heavy civil or site development field experience, including at least 3 years as a Foreman, Assistant Superintendent, or Superintendent on projects of $5M or greater.
- 01Direct experience self-performing mass earthwork, storm and sanitary utilities, and stone / aggregate base operations.
- 02Documented track record of running multi-crew job sites with 15+ field employees on the clock.
- 03Comfort reading civil drawings, grading plans, utility profiles, and survey stakeout sheets.
Qualifications
- 01Disciplined daily planning — three-week look-ahead, daily huddles, and accurate production reporting.
- 02Strong understanding of GPS machine control, cut/fill quantities, and laser/total station layout.
- 03Owner-facing communication: able to run a weekly OAC, own RFIs, and represent VED to inspectors.
- 04Working knowledge of Procore, Bluebeam, and standard scheduling tools (P6 or MS Project).
- 05Valid driver's license with clean MVR; ability to travel to active job sites in the Hampton Roads and Richmond regions.

Physical Demands
- 01Walk active job sites for the majority of the workday in all weather conditions, including uneven terrain, slopes, and excavated areas.
- 02Climb ladders and equipment; ability to enter and exit excavation areas safely.
- 03Lift and carry up to 50 lbs occasionally without assistance.
- 04Wear required PPE (hard hat, high-visibility vest, safety glasses, steel-toed boots, gloves, hearing protection) throughout the work shift.
- 05Reliable attendance for early-morning starts (6:00 AM typical) and occasional weekend coverage during critical pours and tie-ins.
